Don’t strain it, attain it: In other Diamond Brand news, the outfitter will play host on Friday, Oct. 12, to the Whitewater Attainment Race at the Ledges Whitewater Park on Riverside Drive in Asheville. The event begins at 5 p.m. and is not for the faint of pectorals.
“This is an exciting and physically challenging event because the participants compete on a demanding upstream course through the rapids of the French Broad River,” says James Trombley, who astute readers will recognize from the preceding entry.

A river ran through it: The drought that hammered our mountains last summer hasn’t abated, leading state fisheries officials to cut their trout-stocking plans in half.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission claims the stocking reductions are just temporary measures aimed at increasing the survivability of the stocked fish until conditions improve, providing it ever rains around here again.
“Because stream levels are extremely low right now, it makes sense for us to adjust trout stockings accordingly,” says Kyle Briggs, fish-production supervisor with the commission. The original plan was to stock 213,000 fish. Visit www.ncwildlife.org for the whole dismal story.
