Hit the books, hit the trail: What if everyone in WNC took time to read the same book? That’s the premise of the Together We Read program, now in its fifth year. This year, program participants are reading Saints at the River by WNC author Ron Rash, a fictionalized account of a real drowning that took place in the Chattooga River and its aftermath. The TWR program includes discussions, plays, readings and a Sept. 30 hike in the Ellicott Rock Wilderness, sponsored by the Carolina Mountain Club.
To register for the hike, call Danny Bernstein at 236-0192 any time between 5 and 9 p.m. No e-mails, please — calls only. The all-day hike will require participants to have hiking boots, a small backpack, lunch and at least two quarts of water. For more about Together We Read, visit www.togetherweread.org.
Home again, home again, jiggety jig: It’s likely that Thomas Wolfe was too busy meditating on his rancorous upbringing to ever lace up a pair of tennies and go out for a jog. Too bad — it might have done him some good. Nevertheless, the race named for him and benefiting his home place will enter its 30th year of running on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Thomas Wolfe 8K begins at 7:30 a.m., taking in the Montford historic district and Riverside Cemetery and ending at the Wolfe home. Early registration expires today, Sept. 20. Race-morning registration — $20 for adults, $13 for children 14 and younger — will be held between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. at the Thomas Wolfe Visitor Center, 52 N. Market St., just west of the Renaissance Asheville Hotel. For more information, visit www.thomaswolfe8k.com.
