The hell you say: The 27th annual Hilly Hellacious rolls out from Fletcher on Sunday, Aug. 26, with an unprecedented menu of cycling options. Cyclists may now choose from 16 different rides, including a century, a metric-century, a 50-mile and the so-called “Hilly-Lite” 30-miler. The masochists among you can also tack on a few “gut-buster” climbs to any of the rides.
Sponsors include the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and the WNC Bicycle Dealers Association. Last year the ride drew more than 600 cyclists, and it’s sure to be swarmed this year. Stop spinning your wheels and visit www.blueridgebicycleclub.org for the big picture.
And speaking of cycles … : The Tour de Tuck Bike Challenge is edging ever nearer. The event, which takes in more mileage of the Blue Ridge Parkway than any other race in the Southeast, is scheduled for Sept. 22. This year the Tuck will double its field, but it’s still wise to call ahead and secure space for you and your quads-of-steel. The entry fee is $40 through Sept. 7 and $45 afterward. Registration is only available online (at www.tourdetuck.com). For additional information, call (800) 962-1911.
