How green was my river: The health of the Laurel River will get a going-over during a Thursday, Aug. 3, public hearing at Moore Auditorium on the Mars Hill College campus. The recent stir is courtesy of the Wolf Ridge sewage-treatment plant, planned to discharge into Puncheon Fork, one of the Laurel’s tributaries. Registration for the hearing begins a 6 p.m. and the hearing itself starts at 7 p.m.
They’re gonna put me in the movies: Former national and world-champion freestyle kayaker Brian Miller was busy on the Green River last week as the leading man in a “sales and success” video for Zimmer, the world’s biggest manufacturer of orthopedic devices. The upshot of all this is that Brian and others have convinced the medical giant to make a $5,000 memorial donation to the Green River Access fund in the name of filmmaker and river-advocate Daniel DeLaVergne. “Access is always an issue on the Green,” says Miller. “Zimmer’s donation is very much in keeping with Daniel’s legacy.”
