Dig a little deeper: The Carolina Mountain Club invites you to join them for a little maintenance this weekend along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Granted you could spend Saturday, May 12, drowsing in your hammock, but wouldn’t you rather spend it clearing downed limbs and digging out water bars?
Dress for hiking and bring your own lunch and water. Tools will be available but if you have digging implements of your own—bigger than a trowel, say, but smaller than a backhoe—please bring them.
If you’re in, members of the club will be meeting at Moose Café (near the WNC Farmer’s Market entrance on Brevard Road) at 9 a.m. that day for carpooling. If it’s closer for you, you can meet the gang at the Blue Ridge Parkway Maintenance Office at the Balsam Gap intersections of routes 74 and 23 south of Waynesville at 9:30 a.m. For details, visit www.carolinamtnclub.org
Hi-YA!: No, you don’t have to dress in an ankle-length gi, but it just might help your time. On Saturday, May 26, Asheville Brewing Co. will sponsor the first annual “Night of the Ninja 5K Race.” The race begins at 7 p.m. at the pub at 77 Coxe Ave. and ends there, too.
All the sweating, straining and faux-Japanese buildup will help the brewery celebrate the roll-out of its Ninja Porter. The first 100 runners to register will receive a commemorative pint glass, and all runners get their very own Ninja T-shirt and tokens for free beer. (Assuming you’re an of-age runner.)
Proceeds will benefit the Asheville Humane Society. Registration is $20, or $25 the day of the race. Applications and race maps can be found at www.ashevillepizza.com (Click the ninja avatar.) For more information, contact
