Women of the woods: Registration is open for two upcoming events in the Beyond Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, an outdoor skills series sponsored by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
While it takes place a little ways off the mountain, an overnight at McDowell Nature Preserve in Mecklenburg County on May 17 and 18 will verse participants in fishing, archery, kayaking, outdoor cooking, basic camping and backpacking.
A little closer to home, the series will hold a fly-fishing “experience” at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education near Brevard on Aug. 2. Subjects covered will include stream ecology, knot-tying, fly-tying, casting and equipment basics, all leading up to serious angling on the Davidson River. Women ages 18 and older are encouraged to attend the events. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis with fees paid in advance. For additional information, call (919) 707-0172.
Out on a limb: Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa will play host to a tree-climbing championship on Saturday, May 3. The event “is expected to attract professional arborists and tree climbers from all over the country,” says WWC tree-crew member Andrew Wagner, and will involve five preliminaries and a final event, all designed to represent real tree-care practices. The event is free and open to the public.
