Know your tippet from a hole in ground: The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited will offer a one-day fly-fishing school on Saturday, April 21 at Camp Ton-A-Wanda in Flat Rock.
Along with vital information on casting techniques, line management, stream entomology, equipment and other subjects, the clinic will include ongoing fly-tying demonstrations. What’s more, students get the chance to join instructors on local waters the next day to put their newfound skills to work.
Cost is $100 for adults and $50 for students age 10 and older. Lunch is provided. For details and to register, call 274-9867 or 243-6783. Proceeds help support TU’s conservation programs in Western North Carolina.
Kenya calling: When I ran junior-varsity cross country two decades ago, my teammates were lank, pimply types who smelled of Icy Hot and existential angst. Evidently the sport has gotten a lot more sophisticated in the intervening years—international, even.
This July, Mountain High Running Camp will again offer high-school cross-country runners the chance to live and train with elite Kenyan distance runners on the Mars Hill College campus. Planned for July 9 to 14 and July 16 to 21, the camp is open to athletes of all abilities. What’s more, it’s the only summer running camp that offers swag in the form of a brand new pair of Reebok running shoes to everyone who attends.
Mountain High is limited to 150 campers per session. Registration is open to both teams and individuals. For more information, visit www.mountainhighrunning.com.
