While many locals and beer-loving tourists were up at Memorial Stadium for Brewgrass on Saturday, Burial Beer hosted its own minifestival down on the South Slope. Billed as “a celebration of agriculture benefiting Carolina Farm Stewardship Association,” the event matched four breweries that focus on farmhouse ales with four chefs passionate about local food and seasonal ingredients.
Unlike a festival with an all-in-one entrance fee, this festival was à la carte. After purchasing a $5 commemorative glass, you could go your own way paying for pours ($3) and plates ($4) of your choosing. Burial Beers were paired with food from chef Matt Dawes, Fonta Flora worked with chef Obie Ferguson, Wicked Weed with chef Cardiff Creasey and Haw River Farmhouse Ales with chef Isaiah Allen.
The Asheville Waits Band, a Tom Waits cover band, played throughout the afternoon in Burial’s ever-evolving backyard.
