This week and next, Whittington Chiropractic is hosting its annual food drive, an event that offers a chance to get your spine aligned while providing much-needed food resources for the community. The event has some history: This is the 18th year the East Asheville clinic has coordinated the project.
The deal is simple: Bring in a grocery bag full of nonperishable food items for MANNA FoodBank, and in return receive a free chiropractic examination and adjustment. Patients new to the clinic can participate 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. weekdays through Friday, Feb. 7, while existing patients can get their free adjustment only on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Appointments are necessary, and new patients may need to come on separate days to get both the initial examination and the adjustment, but both services are free with a donated bag of food.
Dr. Tom Whittington started the project with a food drive for Food Not Bombs in 1996, when the clinic was still located on South French Broad Avenue. That year they collected nearly 700 pounds of donated items. Whittington says the event is usually a food collection, but in years past they have also contributed to other local charities, including Habitat for Humanity.
“It is a big event and we have a lot of participation,” he says. “Last year we raised a record eight barrels of food in just a couple of weeks. MANNA FoodBank told us that is more food than most big, whole school projects raise.”
Whittington says MANNA is in need of protein items, such as canned tuna, meat and beans, as well as canned vegetables and fruits.
