See and enjoy the 2011 harvest up close at area tailgate markets, which are currently chock full of everything you need for a Fourth of July feast: blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries; local meats and seafood; summer squash, carrots, onions, potatoes — the list goes on.
Be on the lookout for beans, which begin arriving in July, as well as tomatoes. While tomatoes become abundant later in the month, lucky shoppers who get to market early in the next couple of weeks may be able to snag some from farmers with early crops and those growing in a greenhouse.
As the season heats up, also expect more special events at tailgates — from cooking demonstrations to dance performances. The third season of Kids Corner Market at Asheville City Market is going strong. The station is set up with free kids’ activities every Saturday during the summer from 9 a.m. until noon.
