With the recent opening of Azteca #2, Asheville now has two Mexican bakeries—both on Patton Avenue in Asheville. “I don’t know why he doesn’t open on Tunnel Road—maybe he’s wanting a fight,” mused a staffer at La Espija, which has already built up a steady clientele at its Patton Avenue location since its July opening.
C.F. Chan’s in Asheville is out of the dim sum game. The Chen family-owned restaurant, which last year opened on the Broadway Avenue corner formerly occupied by Beanstreets coffee house, has absorbed sister eatery Sushi Thai’s kitchen staff and obscenely popular Thai-tilting menu. The Chens have replaced Sushi Thai with Kanpai Sushi, a Japanese restaurant and sake bar.
