Often when making a playlist, the theme presents itself. This week’s motif is about loneliness, long distances and long shots. Luckily, all of this melancholy produces a set of songs that are less sad than thoughtful. Even better, there are some pretty rocking moments.

• “Saint of Impossible Causes,” from The Ballad of Boogie Christ by Joseph Arthur, who opened for The Afghan Whigs in Asheville earlier this week.
• “Hollow City Streets,” from the self-titled album by Matt Townsend and The Wonder of the World. Townsend performs at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall on Saturday, Oct. 18, 8:30 p.m.
• “Stranger,” from I’m A Stranger Here by The Devil Makes Three. They perform at The Orange Peel on Saturday, Oct. 11, 9 p.m.
• “Himalayan Reverie 1,” from The Healing Muse by Ron Clearfield who gives a concert at The Wysteria Inn in Weaverville on Thursday, Oct. 30.
• “Miles of Skyline,” by Uncle Mountain. Daniel Shearin from that band plays at The Phoenix in Brevard on Saturday, Oct. 11, 1-4 p.m.
