This weekend’s shows present a theme: a heady mix of country and soul that runs the gamut of styles in each of their respective genres. Our playlist doesn’t even touch on all the options (Hank III at The Orange Peel, Broken Lilacs at Bywater, Hearts Gone South at Good Stuff — all on Friday) would have been good options as well. But we’ve got six songs culled from local performances, including a wildcard pick from Bulgogi.
This week’s tracks are:
1. “Turn it Around” by Lucius, from the album Wildewoman. Lucius plays a show at The Mothlight on Saturday, July 19. Tickets were sold out at press time.
2. “Stomp and Holler” by Hayes Carll from KMAG YOYO (& other American stories). Carll headlines this week’s installment of Downtown After 5, Friday, July 18, 5:30 p.m. on Lexington Ave. at the I-240 overpass. Free.
3. “Country Dance Off,” by D. Striker, from Come Over Here. Striker plays a Friday, July 18 set at Jack of the Wood. 8:45 p.m., $5.
4. “Don’t it Drag On” by Chris Smither, from Still on the Levee, which will be released on Tuesday, July 22. Smither performs at The Grey Eagle on Saturday, July 19, at 8 p.m. $20.
5. “Multiply,” by local musician Jim Arrendell from his 2012 album, What Is a Man. Arrendell performs with his band, The Cheap Suits, at Isis Restaurant and Music Hall on Friday, July 18 (9 p.m., $5) and at Tressa’s on Saturday, July 19 (10 p.m. showtime).
6. “Birthday Party” by Tim Tsurutani of local band Bulgogi. That group plays at The Mothlight on Friday, July 18. Deleted Scenes headlines, Minorcan also performs. 9:30 p.m., $8.
