If there’s a theme to this week collection of songs, it has to be unique takes on roots music — though Philadelphia-based rockers Purling Hiss probably don’t fit in the roots category at all. Still, their re-envisioned approach to rock and pop fits with The Wood Brothers’ innovation of blues and Americana, and Judah & The Lion’s giddy revamp of folk.
• “Keep Me Around” from The Muse by The Wood Brothers. They play The Orange Peel on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m.
• “Big Unknown” from Love & Logic by Sons of Bill. They’ll perform at New Mountain on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
• “Sake of the Sound,” the title track from the new album by Front Country. They were at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall on Friday.
• “Kickin’ Da Leaves,” from Judah & The Lion‘s just-release album, Kids These Days. The band takes the stage at New Mountain on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
• “A Letter to Seymour,” from If Sorrow Swims by Greensky Bluegrass. They’ll play The Orange Peel on Friday, Sept. 26.
• “Running Through My Dreams,” from Weirdon by Purling Hiss. That group performs at The Grey Eagle on Sunday, Sept. 28
