Mural artist Dustin Spagnola’s creativity has graced plenty of walls in Asheville (for example, Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable at Prospect, Captain Frederick Pabst at Broadways and, more recently, a zombie head on the Asheville Waste Paper Mill building) in addition to works in Miami, New Orleans and elsewhere. But the painter also speaks on smaller canvases, calling out politicians (“Bush Holding Obama Mask”) and re-envisioning punk icons. His latest theme is much closer and dearer than that, though. It draws from his personal photography collection and “explores the people, places and images that have had a profound impact and personal relevance in my life and my development as an artist.” The Satellite Gallery will exhibit Spagnola’s oil on canvas collection throughout July, with an opening reception on Friday, July 1, at 6 p.m. Free. thesatellitegallery.com.
