Today, May 23, is Bob Moog Day in Asheville, honoring the legendary instrument inventor on what would’ve been his 79th birthday.
The official proclamation, signed by Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, notes that Moog was recently inducted into The Inventor’s Hall of Fame, and won two Grammy’s. It encourages “all citizens to celebrate his legacy and to follow his example to bring great thought and ingenuity to humanity.”
The founder of Moog Music and creator of the legendary Moog synthesizer, he made Asheville the home ofhis family and his company in 1978.
Although Moog passed away in 2005, the company continues to be the leading producer of analog synthesizers in the world, operating out of downtown Asheville. And it is celebrating Bob Moog Day by donating over $25,000 in instruments to Asheville City Schools.
“As a product of the Asheville City School System, I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to give back to our schools, young people and the community,” said Moog Music President Mike Adams in a press release. “I hope that the Moog instruments we donate will inspire kids toward creative expression through the exploration of music. Who knows, maybe one of them is the next Bob Moog or Stevie Wonder!”
Moog employees will also be conducting clinics and instrument demonstrations at each Asheville City School over the next few months, according to the press release.
