New Orleans-based singer-songwriter and pianist Keith Burnstein has passed through Western North Carolina a number of times, often with his band The Mumbles. The musician “pens timeless tunes to live by. His is a new American songbook, one that draws as much from Tin Pan Alley as it does from modern geniuses like Jeff Tweedy, Keith Jarret and Dr. John,” according to his bio. But these days Burnstein is penning tunes for a new project that “fans out the African and Cuban influences found in New Orleans music and adds some really groovy North African guitar to my songs.”
That band, Kettle Black, features guitarist Raja Kassis from Antibalas, master drummer Michael Skinkus from the Radiators and former Ashevillean Luke Quaranta, from Toubab Krewe, on percussion.
Kettle Black plays a free show at Pisgah Brewing Co. on Thursday, July 28, at 8 p.m.
