The only thing more awkward than having awkward sex is talking about it. Onstage. To an audience of strangers. But the femmes fatales of Awkward Sex … and the City do just that. The entourage has performed in New York, Boston, Chicago, D.C. and Philadelphia since the show premiered in 2013. The production comes to to the Lexington Avenue Brewery on Thursday, March 19.
“Awkward sex is a universal topic,” says creator Natalie Wall. “Everyone has had it, no matter their age, gender or sexual preference.”
The show emerged from a blog that Wall began writing while living with her parents in Stafford, Va. (she had just graduated college, was trying to save money and, “I had adult braces at the time,” she says). The traveling production features six female storytellers, each one disclosing a funny, embarrassing or bizarre tale of what happened to them behind closed doors. The stories are intimate, often hilarious, but never vulgar. For example, in one story, a huge bear punches a hole in a cabin wall during an encounter. Turns out bears are attracted to the pheromones produced during sex. Who knew?
The troupe met each other on the improv circuit in New York, and according to Wall, they’ve all had plenty of awkward encounters to draw from. The women keep the material fresh, changing out stories for the summer and winter tours and whenever they revisit a city.
Despite the fact that the show attracts a wide demographic, there is a commonality. “Everyone thinks about awkward sex, but mostly they don’t talk about it,” Wall says. “People leave the show feeling better about themselves.”
