Local poet, performer and event curator Justin Blackburn will serve as the final judge for this year’s Xpress poetry contest. The winning poem will be published online and in print in one of Xpress’ April issues.
Blackburn is the co-creator of the Humansandpoetry collective and its event arm, the Asheville Biscuit Head Slam Poetry Series.

Xpress announces a 2019 poetry contest in celebration of National Poetry Month and our four-issue Sustainability series in April.
Poets are asked to submit work around the theme what Western North Carolina’s environment means to you. Poems should be no longer than one typed page in a 12-point font and must be previously unpublished.
Submissions will be accepted throughout the month of February. The contest will close at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 28. Email the poem in the body of the message or as a Doc attachment to amarshall@mountainx.com. The subject line should read “Xpress poetry contest.” Include the author’s full name and contact information in the email. Only one submission is allowed per person. There is no cost to enter.
The contest is not open to Xpress employees or freelance contributors.
