Asheville Area Arts Council and LEAF in Schools and Streets amp up local outreach programs while making the most of this season’s Lake Eden Arts Festival performers.
This week, Malian musician Vieux Farka Toure (son of the late Malian bluesman Ali Farka Toure) teams up with clawhammer banjo player and traditional music researcher Bob Carlin for a unique demonstration and lecture. Press for the events explains, “Discover connections between the music and culture of Appalachia and Mali with this collaboration of musical minds … Both [Toure and Carlin] will demonstrate the common roots of their music and instruments, highlighting the African roots of the American banjo and exploring this obscure corner of American musical history.”
The event is held Thursday, Oct. 16 from 5-7 p.m. at YMI Cultural Center (39 South Market St., Asheville). Steve Cohen, musician and founder of Music + Art Management, facilitates.
