In January of this year, local promoter and music enthusiast Jake Frankel traveled to Africa with Afro-fusion quintet Toubab Krewe. While the group’s members have traveled to the African continent numerous times, studying with traditional musicians and garnering inspiration for their rock-meets-West African instrumentals, the journey was Frankel’s first. He documented the experience, from airport glitches to Timbuktu’s Festival au Desert.
Read Frankel’s travelogue (with photos by David Suskind, Dave Morelli and Frankel) on National Public Radio’s Afropop Worldwide web site. Look for the headline “Toubab Krewe’s Adventure in Mali: 2007.”
