Dar Williams and Old 97s have both announced plans to play Bele Chere.
Singer/songwriter Dar Williams lists a Friday, July 24, 8 p.m. performance time on her Web site. Known for her pop-folk style, Williams’ career was jump-started by an opening slot for Joan Baez. Baez famously recorded some of Williams’ songs.
Alt-country act Old 97s (pictured) will play Bele Chere on Saturday, July 25. Trivia: Historically, Old 97s (formed in Dallas in 1993) had a feud with fellow alt-country artist Ryan Adams. They’ve sense settled their differences. Front man Rhett Miller has toured with Neil Finn of Crowded House.
Stay tuned for updates—and if your band is slated to play Bele Chere, please let Xpress know.

Hey! I can’t complain about the musical choices anymore!
Oh boy, two more reason to skip the cess pool known as Bele Chere.
Now if only Neil Finn/Crowded House were playing, THAT would be a reason to go!
Ol’ 97’s are a fun live band and I haven’t seen them since the Asheville Music Zone days. Looking forward to it.
Old 97s! Okay, that I will go to.
Old 97s, a legit choice, albeit a bit past their prime days. Still, seeing them for free in my hometown works for me. And Dar Williams likely has a good number of fans with similar feelings.
im sorry but it seems like year after year the music choices just don’t really hold up to par anymore:( I love Asheville but someone on the board needs to step it.
