The following questions were culled from vintage Teen Beat interviews, circa mid-1980s. Xpress poses them to local music stars.
Mountain Xpress: How did you get into music?
Brushfire Stankgrass guitarist Will Saylor: I began playing classical violin at the age of 3. My Mom was a music teacher and I didn’t have much choice.
Q: If you weren’t a musician, what would you want to be?
A: I would like to be a professional outdoorsman and hiking guide. I love to spend time in the mountains. A backcountry ski guide would be pretty cool, too.
Q: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
A: I would increase my motivation. Musicians are naturally lazy and constantly have to self motivate.
Q: Tell us about your car.
A: I drive a truck so I can haul all my gear around. I need a camper top to keep it dry though. When it rains I’m kind of out of luck.
Q: Are you going to play a show in Tulsa?
A: Sure, if they pay me enough to justify the drive.
Q: Who do you consider to be very cool?
A: John Hartford was light years ahead of his time. A very cool songwriter and musician.
Q: Do you have a crush on anyone?
A: Yes, I’m very much in love with my girlfriend. She and I met when she used to tend bar at the Asheville Music Zone. The only groupie I’ve ever had.
Q: What was the most perfect gift you ever received?
A: The original Nintendo along with the Legend of Zelda. Wow, I really loved that game.
Q: What was the nicest thing you’ve ever done for your mom on Mother’s Day?
A: Probably taking her on a nice hike with the family. She loves quality family time.
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I love hiking, skiing, soccer, producing music in my studio.
Q: Describe your perfect day.
A: Sleep until at least 11 a.m. Wake up and bomb down some powdery slopes. A nice soak in a hot tub and then off to a packed club for an exciting gig.
Q: What’s something you refuse to eat?
A: Pickles, any kind of greens (collards etc.) and pigs feet.
Q: If you had to choose one word to describe your life, what would that word be?
A: Comfortable.
Q: Do you have any messages for all your loyal fans?
A: Thanks for coming out to all our shows. We couldn’t do it without you. Keep ‘er stanky!
