Smart Bet web extra: Passerine

Folk/Americana band Passerine (from Sarasota, Fla.) takes their moniker from “the common name for the order of birds that includes not only songbirds known for the sweetness of their songs,” according their bio, “but the raven,  a bird known in myth as the companion of deities, as a courier who inspires laughter and reveals truth, and as a trickster whose appetite for life brings wisdom, healing and great acts of creativity.”

The group began in 2009, led by Carmela Pedicini (vocals and acoustic guitar), Tanya Radtke (vocals and acoustic guitar) and David Brain (dobro). They’ve since added Sara Moone (violin and vocals) and David Baker (bass). ” Passerine strives for an acoustic sound that is honest and compelling, that has purity and depth, that explores the contemporary edge of traditional folk music, and that adds engaging musical layers to even the simplest of songs,” says the band’s website.

Passerine just released new album, Nest of String and their tour, in support of that record, brings them to Isis on Friday, Aug. 2. Nikki Talley and Jason Sharp also perform. 9 p.m., $5 in advance/$8 at the door.
