Business is booming on Haywood Road, and this weekend that will be illustrated again as a second West Asheville retailer unveils its newly-renovated space.
Second Gear outdoor consignment shop recently completed a major expansion into the unoccupied room next door. The move will double its floor space and offer patrons even more opportunities for deals on gently-used gear, ranging from kayaks and bicycles to clothing, maps and camping equipment. Though the new and improved Second Gear has technically been open since last weekend, it will officially celebrate on Saturday, April 2, from noon to 5 p.m., with a grand re-opening party, featuring food and drinks, prizes and discounts.
Managing partner Eric Smythers says the move was spawned by necessity and opportunity. Much like Harvest Records, which is located just blocks from the shop and recently underwent its own expansion, Second Gear had long been pressed for space. However, the owners remained hesitant to relocate.
“Definitely over the last six months we’ve seen the need to expand because we carry so many products,” explains Smythers. “This was a unique opportunity to do so without having to move.”
The timing couldn’t have been better. April marks seven years since Second Gear’s opening, and the grand re-opening will unofficially double as an anniversary celebration. In that time, the consignment shop has sold more than 40,000 items and served more than 2,600 consignors, according to the owners.
