Asheville teen Jack Devereux is one of the world’s youngest builders of the Irish uilleann pipes. In Wednesday’s Xpress, he’s the subject of an A&E feature.
Click here to listen to Devereux play a set of low or “flat” uilleann (pronounced “illin”) pipes built by Olympia, Washington pipe maker Brad Angus.
Devereux has a perfectionist bent and complained that his pipes—obstinate under the best of circumstances—were “just not clicking” the day he played this jig. “I need to spend a lot of time working on these guys,” he said.
Regardless, the sample gives an impression of a very gifted young musician/craftsman carrying on a centuries-old tradition.
