Asheville’s thriving jam and electronic scenes are poised to find common ground this week as Lotus brings trance rock instrumentals and retina-burning visuals to The Orange Peel.
The oft-bootlegged five piece combines live instrumentation and a love for classic rock, funk and jazz with a dance-worthy dose of electronic beats and synth landscapes. Needless to say, that paves the way for some, lets say interesting crowds (think jam-rock hippies rubbing shoulders with neon-clad ravers). Early in its career, Lotus maintained a more rock-centric approach that relied heavily on improvisation, but over the years it’s developed a sound that owes more to experimental electronic artists like Aphex Twin and Kraftwerk than to jam bands like The Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers. Add the group’s reputation for mind-bending light displays, wildly-varied setlists, off-the-wall covers and sometimes rave-like party conditions and you’ve one hell of an identity crisis, in a good way.
