Jonathan Scales may be one of Asheville’s most innovative artists. A classically trained composer, Scales has taken the steel pan into uncharted territory, combining the unorthodox rhythms and fluid time signatures of jazz with a melodic rock sensibility that’s both dizzying and broadly appealing.
Following the release of Character Farm & Other Short Stories last year, the band hit the road for a string of more than 70 out-of-town gigs. This year looks to be no different, with dates lined up through the end of July, including performances at Merlfest and the PANorama Caribbean Music Festival. Tomorrow, the Fourchestra makes a semi-rare local appearance (its last was for the Asheville Improvisational Music Festival in February) at One Stop Deli and Bar with local jazz-rock outfit The Archrivals — fronted by stephaniesid keyboardist Chuck Lichtenberger and often featuring the band’s singer/frontwoman Stephanie Morgan — and Molli Parti — the “DJ alter ego” of Paper Tiger‘s Molly Kummerle.

In the meantime, check out the Fourchestra’s new video, released earlier this week:
