The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center hosts A Night of Cage on Wednesday, Aug. 15. This week (Sunday, Aug. 12) marks the hundredth birthday of the late composer John Cage (who staged his first “happening” at Black Mountain College). Percussionists Jason DeCristofaro, Laura Franklin and Matthew Richmond celebrate Cage’s centennial with a performance of Cage’s “Third Construction,” composed in 1941.
According to a press release, “The fascinating array of percussion instruments used in this piece include: tom tom drums, conch shell, maracas, wooden ratchet, graduated tin cans, Chinese cymbal, claves, quijadas, cricket callers, teponzatli, Indo-Chinese rattle and more.”
Guitarist Shane Perlowin performs an original composition for solo classical guitar dedicated to John Cage and based on the composer’s prepared piano music.
7:30 p.m. show time, $10 general admission or $5 for BMCM+AC members and students with ID.
