The founding members of blues-rock band Hot Tuna (as well as early members of Jefferson Airplane) perform a special night of acoustic music at Diana Wortham Theatre tonight, Wednesday, July 11.
According to press for the event, “probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady.” Guitarist Kaukonen was recruited to Jefferson Airplane by folkie Paul Kantner in the mid-1960s; guitarist/bassist Casady replaced original bassist Bob Harvey in late ‘65. While Jefferson Airplane was on hiatus in ‘69, Kaukonen and Casady performed some gigs as a duo, and released an album in ‘70 culled from their live shows. That was the beginning of Hot Tuna, which went on to open for the full Jefferson Airplane lineup before becoming as independent entity.
Hot Tuna has been in action (minus a couple of lengthy breaks) since ‘69. In recent years, the band has played at Bonnaroo and included blues harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite in its lineup.
Pisgah Brewery presents tonight’s concert at Diana Wortham Theatre. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $31.
