Django Reinhardt was an innovator with the soul of a gypsy. The sound of his jazz guitar wafted through the Romani camps near Paris during the 1930s and quickly spread throughout Europe and America. Reinhardt invented a new way to play guitar, combining nomadic gypsy sounds with fast-paced rhythms, often called “hot jazz.” His creativity and passion inspired countless musicians, from classical guitarist Julian Bream to Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.
Reinhardt’s rollicking sound has a special place in Asheville’s heart. For the past four years, local gypsy jazz enthusiasts have come together to celebrate Django Reinhardt’s birthday. This year’s tribute will feature Thomas Michael, One Leg Up, Six String Swing with Bill Cardine and the Page Bros, Viper’s Dream, King Leo’s New Hot Rhythm, John Henry’s Jazz Band and The Hot Point Trio.
The Grey Eagle will once again host the birthday bash, scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 23. The show has sold out in previous years, so advanced tickets are recommended. Expect plenty of toe-tapping and swirling skirts as Django Reinhardt’s classic melodies fill the air.
