Too often, murals are something we drive or walk past without noticing. Countless hours of work go into these public displays of art, but rarely do mural artists bring their works inside the gallery.
Canton resident Laurel Tewes is taking her technique to the gallery wall for the Haywood County Arts Council’s Gallery 86’s opening exhibit of the season. This solo show will feature smaller-scale works on canvas, which Tewes describes as “triple the difficulty” because they must convey her subject both up close and far away.
If you’re looking for something a little bit larger, Tewes will be demonstrating her mural techniques with an eight-foot painting of hollyhocks on canvas. The public is invited to watch her as she paints on Fridays and Saturdays during the exhibition.
Tewels says her new passion is graphite and pencil drawings, which will be on display as well. She is inspired Japanese woodblocks called Ukiyo-e, which is loosely translated to “floating world.” The works are care-free and Tewes’ interpretations are inspired by nature.
