Further proof that Nashville is as much about country music these days as Ugg is about fleece-lined sorority-girl boots: Auto Defiance. From East Nashville’s art deco district, the melodic rock quintet sounds more post-Velvet Underground, more post-Guided by Voices, more post-Collective Soul than, say, The Band Perry. Or whatever.
Auto Defiance just release its new single, “Heart Attack” (it’s a free download on Bandcamp). The song, which deals with the excesses of Hollywood and materialism, is lush and expansive. It recalls glittery dance floors and late-night drives. It’s all atmosphere and lustrous guitars. Lead singer Bradley Boyer has the sort of voice that echoes and rings, his tone both brooding and warm. Listen to the song here:
