Shivering Timbers — fronted by husband-and-wife duo Jayson and Sarah Benn — is from Akron, Ohio. That’s the same place that gave us “Chrissie Hynde, Devo, Robert Quine, Joseph Arthur, and The Black Keys,” says the band’s website. That Black Keys connection was especially convenient: Keys guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach produced Shivering Timbers’ debut album, We All Started In The Same Place, “a collection of original home-spun and studio crafted songs, folk songs, and nursery rhymes re-imagined and inspired by the birth of their daughter.”
The band is mostly sweet and more quirky than corny. Sara’s voice is pretty and easy, but she can also rock (“Noble Duke of York”). Her stand up bass plays an important role in the Shivering Timbers’ sound. Jayson’s guitar playing is closer to indie-rock than indie-folk, and drummer Brad Thorla drives the whole project.
Shivering Timbers plays The Emerald Lounge on Friday, Oct. 14 with Tennessee Hollow and Mystery Cult. 10 p.m., $5.
