Work off all that Valentine’s Day chocolate with a serious dose of Latin funk. Austin, Tex.-based eight-piece ensemble Brownout knows how to get your heart rate up. Blasts of horns, deep bass grooves and a kit drummer along with a conga player all add up to a night-long dance party.
Brownout is “is both offspring and germinating seed to Grammy award winning Latin ensemble Grupo Fantasma,” says press for the band. “Brownout may well be Grupo Fantasma’s psychedelic Latin funk alter-ego, an offshoot of the collective that regularly backs Prince, its latest incarnation, or even its alter ego. What they are not is the sprawling conjunto’s side project. Brownout has taken Grupo Fantasma’s funk roots and blown them up. In the process they’ve taken on a life and developed a unique sound all their own.”
Brownout plays Asheville Music Hall on Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 p.m. Funk/jam outfit Earphunk, from New Orleans, opens. $8 in advance / $12 day of show. Or get in for free: Xpress will give away a pair of tickets to the event. Contest on Facebook tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 14) at noon.
