Local steel pan fusion act Jon Scales Fourchestra opened Sunday from the battery park Stage. Scales has performed at previous Bele Cheres; he tweeted “sound guy put on UFO Tofu to warm up the crowd b4 we took the stage @ Bele Chere” right before his set. Jacob Rodriguez made a guest appearance on tenor sax.
Local psychedelic indie-rock outfit Doc Aquatic played the Coxe Avenue stage at 3 p.m. The audience was filled with local band members and music fans either huddling in small pools of shade or working on their tans in the (rare) stretch of sunshine. A full review of this set will follow.
Folk-rockers The Mountain Goats (led by John Darnielle) were in Asheville last fall for a completely different sort of show: They played The Grey Eagle with indie-soul artist Matthew E. White. The band’s Bele Chere set — headlining the final day from the Biltmore Stage — gave the festival its final notes. Some tweets from the show:
@mygothlaundry: John Darnielle playing at bele chere amazingly wonderful show
@teamstonester: @mountain_goats I hope we both die @ Bele Chere Summer Festival
@PorkChopLive: @mountain_goats heading to Bele Chere with my 1.5mo old Daughter Emmylou Reed to see you guys, her first show.
