Before he disappears completely

Street magician Harry Merkin, of Indianapolis, followed his day job as a traveling repair geek to Asheville. Job completed, Merkin found himself with a bit of free time, a few decks of cards, a magic wand and a large bow tie. He is plying his real profession on street corners for a few more days, possibly a week, before heading to points north and east.

Merkin is as good a close-up sleight-of-hand artist as has been seen hereabouts in a long, long time. He’ll repeat tricks, inches from your nose, over and over, and still you can’t see how it’s done. Turning a $20 bill into a $1 bill is astonishing. The flaming quarter will amaze. If you see him on the street, at least stop and thank him for helping to keep Asheville weird!

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we’ve never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
