Combining the personal and political, the photo exhibit “Strength, Spirit and Dignity: Portraits of Haiti” will be celebrated with a reception and discussion this Friday night (Jan. 19) at the YMI Cultural Center Galleries. The photographs were taken by Tom Plaut from Madison County. The evening is planned as an opportunity to learn about Haiti, its people, and policy issues including the “global … systemic racism” of international neglect towards Haiti, according to Plaut’s analysis.
The free event, which includes refreshments, is hosted by the Center for Participatory Change, an area nonprofit working with rural and low-wealth people and their communities. It is open to the public, and takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the YMI Cultural Center (39 South Market St. in Asheville).
