⢠Sadly, horror stories about one downtown gallery continue to arise: An artist being paid more than six months after work was sold; another piece being sold and its creator issued a bill for unauthorized reframing costs instead of a check. Asheville is full of artists desperate for a place to exhibit … but word does get around.
⢠Are WNC’s university art departments missing an important collaborative opportunity? Brad Thomas, curator at the Van Every/Smith galleries at Davidson College north of Charlotte, keeps bringing in phenomenal shows—so let’s see a push to get some of this international work up here. Thomas’ latest effort brings pieces by big British names Henry Moore, Antony Gormley and William Tucker.
⢠The faculty show at Brevard College revealed several pleasant surprises. One was a large steel sculpture by Kyle Lusk—beautifully balanced and graceful. A 5-foot penile shape of rough, textured, wood-fired clay by Warner Hyde dominated the interior gallery. And it’s clear that Tim Murray is working harder than ever. He shows three-dimensional works in wood and clay, plus a big painting and several works on paper. “Little Tree/Big Sky,” a small painting by Bill Byers, is distinguished by beautifully sweeping clouds.
⢠The folks at Flood are taking some time off from exhibits to do more renovation. Watch for new shows in the spring.
