Farewell, Beanstreets: Beanstreets Coffeehouse Cafe, long an Asheville staple and recipient of numerous awards in the yearly Xpress readers’ poll, has closed. A handwritten note posted on the front door thanks loyal customers for 12 years of business, and then states simply, “We have to go now,” but then hints at the possibility of a re-opening elsewhere in town. One door closes … Not all is lost in the coffee-shop world. Everyday Gourmet, the java joint formerly known as Gold Hill, is expanding its menu and beverage selections and its hours. Owner Traci Taylor recently informed Xpress that, as business has picked up after the cafe’s grand (re)opening, the lunch menu choices have grown accordingly, and quite soon a brand-new pastry case will be installed to accommodate a brand-new pastry chef. A beer and wine license is in the works, and within the next month, Everyday Gourmet will be open into the evening, serving such light fare as antipasto platters and cheese plates. Hurricane help: West Asheville is preparing to lend a helping hand to those affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. On Sunday, Oct. 23, various West Asheville businesses will throw a block party in the parking lot behind the Bledsoe building (where Orbit DVD, Westville Pub and others are housed). There will be plenty of live music, food from local businesses such as the Lucky Otter and the Westville Pub, silent auctions and more. The party goes all day, from 2 p.m. to midnight, so there’s plenty of time to show up and lend your support. The event is still in the planning stages, so further details will be forthcoming.
