It’s still more than a month away from the first downtown Asheville gallery stroll of the season. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of the spring-like weather this weekend and check out some new artwork around Asheville.
• A Work of Heart opens this Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Asheville Area Arts Council. Works include outsider, visionary and folk art pieces by differently disabled adults.
• The Satellite Gallery has a very moving photography and mixed media show on exhibit. The work is by Miss Glo (of LaZoom Tours) who recently visited New Orleans and, with the help of a friend and her son, shot a series of images that incorporate the Mississippi River, the oil spill and baptism.
• The Haen Gallery recently opened Winter’s Ebb, “a Group Show of new work to encourage the end of the winter doldrums, featuring Kathryn Kolb, Lynn Boggess, Byron Gin, Clayton Santiago, Mary-Ann Prack, Marci Crawford Harnden and others.” It runs through Thursday, March 31.
• Castell Photography introduces Studies on Friday, Feb. 18. The show features “the work of Asheville artist Honour Hiers and Wisconsin artist Wanrudee Buranakorn. Hiers creates stunning large-scale color studies of the physical nature of botanical specimens, and Buranakorn’s work consists of incorporeal figure studies that are truly a view into the internal and otherworldly,” says the gallery. (Pictured here, “In a Past life I Was a Mermaid” by Wanrudee Baranakorn.) An opening reception takes place Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. with both artists in attendance.
• Flood Gallery in the Phil Mechanic Studios building hosts Black Artists: Yesterday and Today, an arts and culture program concurrent with Black History Month. The exhiobit includes works culled from a mont-long arts program in Asheville City Schools. Opening reception Friday, Feb. 18, 5-7 p.m.
