I enjoyed the article “Beyond Bathrooms: HB2 Accelerates Changes in Attitudes, Language” [July 27, Xpress] very much. I found myself getting lost in the descriptive terminology, not knowing what they meant, but [the accompanying box containing] “Gender 101” helped.
I am a straight woman with gay and lesbian friends and family as well as transgender friends. I abhor HB2 or any laws passed that discriminate, period!
This article is informative on several levels. Educating in a nonthreatening way is what will help people understand each other better. I am proud of Asheville’s openness, support and stand on these important issues. Hopefully, HB2 will be a thing of the past in the near future!

Preface- yea, HB2 is Jim Crow 2.0 and we the state of NC are the laughing stock of civilized Americans (where they may still exist).
But if you feel ‘threatened’ by being educated by a well written article, there are plenty of New Age shysters as well as “Lock her up’ conspiracy theorists in this town to choose from to get your information from as an alternative. I’d only ask how being educated is at all threatening? Perhaps you’re thinking of being indoctrinated, brainwashed or browbeaten?
The Latin root word homonyms for ‘educate’ suggest conducting, leading, raising up, rearing (as in children), etc. Nothing threatening about that, unless your last name is McCarthy, er, oops, McCrory.
