With the cool crispness of fall nearly upon us, two Marshall artisan businesses — Smoke Signals wood-fired bakery and Sketchbook Crafts — are partnering to celebrate the shift of seasons with food, friends and art. Their Smörgåsbord Fall Equinox Feast happens 5-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Marshall High Studios on Marshall’s Blannahassett Island.
This second installment in a four-part series exploring baking, craft and lunar cycles promises to highlight the work and Scandinavian heritage of two Marshall sisters — baker Tara Jensen of Smoke Signals and seamstress and textile designer Amber Jensen of Sketchbook Crafts.
The buffet-style feast, which will take place under the outdoor pavilion on Blannahassett Island next to the studio, will showcase Tara Jensen’s work with dishes spotlighting Scandinavian grains such as rye and barley in cold salads and breads paired with seasonal vegetables, pickles, cured meats and mustards. For those who aren’t already full, Smoke Signals’ sweet potato pie, which was featured in Food & Wine magazine, will be front-and-center for dessert along with Danish butter cookies and coffee.
“The night promises to warm both the body and spirit as we explore the connections between wool and rye, weaver and baker and the natural world around us,” says Tara Jensen in a press release.
The Jensen sisters will discuss their art beginning at 7:30 p.m., and local singers and puppeteers West of Roan will present an outdoor performance based on Scandinavian ballads. Attendance is limited to 20 individuals. Tickets cost $75 per person and are available here. The event’s full schedule is below:
- 5 to 6 p.m.: Open studio sale and glögg (mulled wine) at Sketchbook Crafts
- 6 to 7:30 p.m.: Smörgåsbord meal under the pavilion on Blannahassett Island
- 7:30 to 8:30p.m.: Artist talks by Amber Jensen and Tara Jensen and outdoor theater performance by West of Roan
