“This time nine years ago, Matt and I (and a bunch of close friends) were scrambling to try to open a record store that we didn’t actually know how to run, in a neighborhood that no one really cared about,” begins a Facebook post by Harvest Records co-owner Mark Capon. Since then, the store and the neighborhood have come a long way.
On Saturday, Aug. 10, the shop (now a staple of the local music scene) officially celebrates nearly a decade in business. Lucky for music fans, that party takes the form of a storewide sale featuring new items at 15 percent off, used items sans 20 percent, free posters, raffle prizes and a massive basement sale with thousands of used records for a buck each. The subterranean record room is usually off limits.
And as for that “neighborhood that no one really cared about”: a Facebook event page for the sale reminds shoppers, “Don’t forget to support our beautiful neighboring businesses on Saturday — caffeinate yourself beforehand at Battlecat Coffee; get lunch/dinner/drinks at The WALK or Desoto Lounge, or grub at Hank’s BBQ (in back of Battlecat); pretty much anything you need at The Gas-Up; hell, get tatted up by our homies at Hot Stuff Tattoo!”
