It’s time for local kids and teens (with the help of their parents and teachers) to submit their creative work for possible publication in Mountain Xpress’ annual Kids Issue.
Each year, Xpress highlights the colorful, thoughtful and engaging work of area K-12 students in a special issue, which also includes listings on local and regional summer camps. This year, we’ll publish the issue on March 18.
This year’s issue will offer two thematic choices: A Kid’s View, and Activism. A Kid’s View offers a broad avenue for kids to share their perspectives through art, essays, poetry, photography and — new this year — multimedia.
Activism (a theme suggested by an Asheville educator) offers a more focused route of expression via essays, art, poetry, photography and multimedia work.
For those who choose Activism as their theme, here are some sample starting points:
- What does activism mean to you?
- What problems in our community call out for activism? What do you think should be done?
- Have you engaged in activism? Tell us about it.
Submission details
Art should be digitally scanned, or able to be scanned by Mountain Xpress. Photos of sculptures are also permissible.
Essays should be no more than 350 words (though some exceptions can be made).
Poems: Short-form poetry is preferred, with poems limited to a maximum of 30 lines.
Photos should be high-resolution, digital photos.
Multimedia submissions should be no longer than 3 minutes and will be considered for posting on the Xpress website.
Students can submit previously produced work that speaks to the theme, or create something new.
Be sure to have a parent/guardian/teacher sign the Mountain Xpress Community Contributor Agreement and return with the artwork.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 20. Submissions will be considered for publication in the March 18 issue of Mountain Xpress. Due to space limitations of the print edition, some submissions may be considered for online-only publication.
