As its name might suggest, Black Skies is fond of doom and gloom. But the trio’s sludgy guitars and crushing percussion mask an underlying harmony, most evident in the soaring solos and echoing female vocal harmonies. There’s no denying that the chest-caving drum fills are all are metal, but the screeching wah-wah and eerie dissonance of slower tracks like “The Other Side of the Mountain” owe a heavy debt to psychedelic stoner rock. It’s a paradox of (dark) moods, with something for fans of nearly every hard rock genre. Stoner rock, check. Doom metal, definitely. Southern rock, a little.
Most of all, the band is loud, powerful and dynamic … in an unmistakably metal sort of way.
