Don’t put the baby in the king cake just yet. Asheville is known for its pre-Fat Tuesday festivities and this weekend is no exception.
If you want the Asheville Mardi Gras parade to take over the city, put on an apron and dish up some crawdaddies. A Canjun cook-off, to benefit the upcoming revelry, is open to local chefs and foodies of all levels. Competitors will vie a cook-off trophy and year-long bragging rights. Even if this is your first pot of gumbo, come on down now, ya’hear.
After you have your fill, there will be an art and oddities auction featuring “spectacular, bazaar, collectible and crafty items created by local legends and folk artists.” New Orleans jazz and zydeco will follow.
Whether you show up with a stockpot or not, there will be plenty to eat. No word on the exact dishes, but there will definitely be hearty of servings of Louisiana’s signature foods.
Saturday, Jan. 21, 2 p.m. at Tressa’s Downtown Jazz and Blues on Broadway, 28 Broadway St. $10.
Costumes encouraged!
