On a blustery November day a few dozen people stood around on the sidewalk and in the street on Clingman Avenue to hear about the history of the River Arts District and the history of Highland Clays. Then they heard from Mayor Bellamy and Buncombe County Commissioner David Gantt. Finally they heard from the artists who created the mural.
Then it was time to see what they came for. Oddysey center for ceramic arts has a new entryway. A 200-square-foot ceramic mural depicting life in the RAD, including a 2-foot-tall coffee cup, train tracks, hearts and hand prints.
The artists, Kathy Triplett and Alex Irvine worked with new and recycled materials and took inspiration from life in the RAD to create the unique design which was well received by viewers. “Wow,” said Jason Sither, “It looks like how I feel when I walk up this street. Amazing.”
