What happens when a ballet dancer has to learn to belly dance — or when an aerial artist has to learn to swing dance — in only two days flat? These are the questions that propel Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre’s 48 Hour Dance Project.
Last weekend, five local choreographers — a modern dance teacher, an African dancer, a belly dancer, aerialist and swing dancer — stepped up to the tremendous challenge: In exactly 48 hours, while working with dancers from various technical backgrounds assigned to them at random by pulling names from a hat, they created an original dance. After a weekend marathon of rehearsals, choreographers watched as their work was performed for two sold-out shows at the BeBe Theatre. The results were consistently wild, exciting and inspiring.
