• The exhibit In Flux: Katherine Duncan Aimone/Barbara Nerenz-Kelley, opens at the Asheville Area Arts Council (11 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-0710). According to press for the show (which runs through Saturday, March 27), “Both are abstractionists. Almost exactly a year ago the two women met at a painting workshop, and decided to make it a weekly commitment to paint together. That commitment yielded the creation of many paintings and a lasting friendship.” Wine and cheese reception from 5-8 p.m.
• George Ivey, a conservationist and consultant based in Haywood County, received acclaimed for his debut book, Up River: A Novel of Attempted Restoration. (The book focuses on the struggle to save Appalachian rivers.) City Lights Bookstore (3 East Jackson St., Sylva, 586-9499) hosts Ivey for a reading and book signing at 7 p.m.
• How to impress a date: Tapas, Spanish wine, world beat music: Cabo Verde performs at Zambra (85 W. Walnut St., Asheville, 232-1060). 8 p.m.
• Brushfire Stankgrass brings their unique “banjos to moogerfoogers” sound to Jack of the Wood (95 Patton Ave., Asheville, 252-5445). 9 p.m.
• Indie/punk/rock outfit Wooden Toothe puts in an appearance at New French Bar (12 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 225-6445). Expect tight song writing and a raucous delivery. 9 p.m.
• Mo Daddy’s (77 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1550) gears up for its first hip-hop show: A blow-out event with Asheville’s Foul Mouth Jerk, PyInfamous (from Crystal Springs, Miss.) and Charlotte’s One Big Love. This is also a food drive; the first 10 people through the door with canned goods to donate to the food drive receive a special limited-edition commemorative poster. 9 p.m., $5.
• Asheville’s killer psychobilly act The Go Devils (a trio who go by the names Brophy, Jay McBones and Springs) wrap up the night at Stella Blue (31 Patton Ave., Asheville, 236-2424) with Blacklist Royals and Transylvania Transport Co. 10 p.m., $5.

• Two author events at Malaprop’s (55 Haywood St., Asheville, 254-6734): Roanoke Times columnist Tom Angleberger discusses The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, his story about a sixth-grader who makes a surprisingly prescient Yoda finger puppet. 4 p.m. Later, artist Alex Bigney (his art is pictured below) discusses Talking to Tesla: An Artist’s Dream Journal, which, according to Malaprop’s, “pairs Bigney’s own story with reflections upon a vivid series of dreams in which scientist Nikola Tesla visited him.” 7 p.m.
• On the heels of show number 500, The Brittany Reilly Band takes the stage at The Feed & Seed (3715 Hendersonville Rd., Fletcher, 216–3492). 6:30 p.m., donations.
• Nashville-based roots musician Daniel Lawrence Walker plays a free show at The Watershed (207 W. State St., Black Mountain, 669-0777). 8 p.m.
• Psychedelic garage band Where the Buffalo Roamed shared a bill with The John Douglas Company and Another Day Falls at The Boiler Room (11 Grove St., Asheville, 505-1612). 9 p.m., $5.
